Mandarin: Buffet

Image
Mandarin is a known buffet that also happens to be loved by many (including myself). For as long as I can remember, I have never had a negative thing to say concerning the food. I must admit, sometimes the noodles and chicken can be a bit oily, for instance a few days ago when I went with my family for lunch, but that's not a huge issue for me (I still love them 😊). I constantly find myself coming back and craving for more. After all, whenever I hear the word "restaurant" I think of one of the two places, either Mandarin or 168 Sushi. What can I say, I LOVE asian food! ♡ ♡ ♡ Mandarin does an excellent job with their overall cleanliness, which is and should be a huge factor in each and every restaurant. If I walk in a restaurant and see large messes in the dining room or anywhere visible, I instantly have negative thoughts, which ruins my experience right away. God knows how terrible the kitchen must look if the staff can't keep the restaurant clean, it's no...

Montana's Cookhouse: ...A restaurant falling off?

Image
http://manecourse.blogspot.ca/search/label/Montanas Montana's is one of those barbeque joints found in every town in virtually North America. They rave about their ribs, wings, and steak. Montana's is a Canada-wide chain, maybe surprising considering its American name. First off, the ribs. Montana's ribs are my favourite, or at least they were. They were always perfectly tender smoked ribs with a delicious Texan sauce. This has changed however as the past two times I went the ribs were chewy, gross. The chicken wings are mediocre - enough said. Now I'm sorry to disappoint you steak lovers, but I have to admit that I'm not one of you. And neither are the people that I dine with. So I cannot review the steak, I apologize. But I can say that if you do want steak from a reputable cookhouse, you should stick to Montana's or Longhorn Steakhouse. Finally the french fries. They're delicious. Unlike most generic fries that only have salt, these fries are perfect...

Jack Astor's- Rathburn Location

Image
Jack Astor's is a large restaurant chain boasting affordable pub fare and a large bar, and the Square One location was nothing above and beyond in terms of the food, you can expect the typical greasy burger with your pint of Rolling Rock, nothing surprising here. That being said the service was absolutely breathtaking, I sat at the bar between classes for a little liquid encouragement before my next class and was greeted by Brian who approached with a smile and asked my name and even shook my hand, he was prepared to offer another drink the moment I finished my first and didn't pass judgement on the fact that is was only 4pm. Overall the experience was wonderful and I will definitely be returning for a few more pints of Mill Street Organic. ~Jesse G.

168 Sushi: Japan Buffet & Bar

Image
Don't let the name fool you, 168 Sushi isn't just amazing sushi, there's also a wide variety of other food choices. Aside from the fact that a few sushi rolls fell completely apart as I was picking them up with my chopsticks, I'd still say that the food was incredibly enjoyable. Walking in alone gives you a warm and welcoming presence, which I personally feel is a major factor in any overall positive experience. Instead of getting up continuously and making your way through crowded buffet lines and awkwardly bumping into a bunch of random people, 168 Sushi avoids all of those issues by having iPad's where you can select all of the items you want and simply confirming your order. Shortly after, all the food your table selected gets handed to you from 168 Sushi's staff. Speaking of the staff, that's probably the one thing about 168 Sushi that I would change. Most of the staff members I've ever come across at 168 Sushi come off as either crabby or just ...

Swiss Chalet: Family Dining

Image
Don't be mistaken by the name "Swiss Chalet," there's nothing Swiss about it. Swiss Chalet is a family restaurant that prides itself in its rotisserie chicken, which really has no flavour. The inside of the meat is juicy while the outside is always chewy in a non-satisfying way. The ribs are just good. The flavour is tasty but nothing above and beyond. Sometimes the meat is deliciously tender while other times it is chewy. The fries have no seasoning, which is what the "Chalet sauce" is for. A few pastas are also available, as well as burgers and other items you expect to find at a family restaurant. The food is very affordable, in comparison to other sit-down restaurants. Swiss Chalet is the place to go for an adequate meal that will be enjoyable in a nice atmosphere. This is not your fine dining experience. -Bryana Gero

El Mariachi: Tacos and Churros

Image
Tucked away in the "Village in the city" , aka Streetsville, hides El Mariachi, a small cantina style restaurant boasting authentic Mexican cuisine and tequila. El Mariachi completely disproves the idea that "size matters", featuring a bar and seating area that's comparable in size to that of a Toronto apartment it is most definitely a surprising experience. The staff at El Mariachi were very inviting and make patrons feel at home as soon as they walk through the door, and happily brought us to a table without any wait whatsoever. Both my girlfriend and I opted for the burritos and were blown away, they were at our table in under 15 minutes and were prepared to perfection, in fact it was such a wonderful experience that we had to make a return trip just to see if the rest of the menu lived up to expectations. On our return visit we once again ended up getting the same thing, however this time we tried the chimichangas and were equally blown away by the staf...

Scaddabush: Italian Cuisine

Image
Scaddabush is located at 209 Rathburn Rd at Square One, the heart of the city. This rustic Italian eatery has stylish decor pieces, an open kitchen, and an island where staff prepare pizza and other goods up close. The restaurant is all about the atmosphere that it tries very hard to maintain. Servers are allowed to have their long tresses out, despite the obvious threat that may pose. You are sure to see servers rocking the 'man-bun,' as well as an attractive Asian fella with full sleeves and chest of tattoos. It all comes together to create the critical atmosphere Scaddabush depends on to get customer back in their doors. The restaurant just feels like a place one wants to be. But when you grade those layers away like mozzarella, you start to see the restaurant for what it is, over exaggerated. The menu itself as well as "my" server were eager to talk about the in-house made mozzarella and pasta. However the al-day al-dente is not some thing that will suit all. For ...
